This is the first time I’ve refused to go in a cemetery.
Passing through Deadwood, South Dakota on the way back to Colorado, we thought the walk up steep Lincoln Avenue would yield a nice chance to stretch our legs and see an historic cemetery. No, it was $2 to visit Mt. Moriah Cemetery because of the “celebrity” graves and upkeep. Yes, I know, it would’ve been $4 total, but it’s the principle of the thing.
All those Harley-Davidson riders cavorting around town and blowing their life savings in Deadwood casinos–those tourism dollars are not making it to the cemetery? (Nota bene, Harleys are not cheap bikes and maintain their resale value better than your average sportbike.)
At least it was a pleasant walk from downtown Deadwood, and the view from the top of the hill was worth the trip. Nice to be back in big sky country.
I guess the proper rebellious act would have been to pay to visit, then take a plethora of photos and offer them for your FREE viewing pleasure on this here blog. Next time…it’s only 8 hours away.
